iPhone 11 First Impression

First impression

Just a little background to let you know where I am coming from.

I never got the iPhone X, the last phone I used is the 4’7″ iPhone 7.

It’s definitely heavier

First, it is so much heavier than my iPhone 7. I looked up the specs and the iPhone 7 is 138 g while the iPhone 11 is 194 g. That’s about adding 40% extra weight of the iPhone 7. The last big phone I had was the Samsung Note 2 at 183 g but the Note 2 actually felt a lot lighter. It might be the more flexible material Note 2 was made. iPhone always felt a bit more denser than most other phone.

It feels less handy

People are saying that 6’1″ is just right, between the the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max but this is a little big for me coming from the iPhone 7. When I put the iPhone 7 on top of the iPhone 11, the 11 is only just a little bigger, like 12 mm taller and 8 mm wider. It’s not that much but it feels so much bigger in my hand. It’s not like I never had a big phone before, I had a Samsung Note 2 and then a LG G4, but both of those Android phones were thinner and especially at the edge for LG G4.   Because of its size, it is not as handy as my iPhone 7. It feels a lot less handy. At times I feel like I am holding a brick with the extra weight. I just can’t be as care free, I don’t feel as free holding it to take photos, especially with one hand as I could with my iPhone 7. iPhone 7 was like a pocket knife I could take out very swiftly where as the iPhone 11 is like a thin wooden chopping board. I felt like I traded my iPhone 7 for a much bigger phone, which isn’t really.

It’s Fast

Compare with the iPhone 7, the iPhone 11 is fast. The speed is very obvious. It’s like driving a super sport cars like a 500hp BMW M3 where just a tap of the gas pedal sends you accelerating, like a Tesla, it is so fast off its feet and yet so smooth, quiet and effortlessly as well. In comparison, my old iPhone 7 is like a premium sedan, like an Audi A6. It’s still fast but can’t compared to a Tesla Model S accelerating. Everything just runs fast and silky smooth. It’s exactly the feeling of getting a new powerful phone with the fastest, most powerful mobile phone processor inside. And that’s one of the great thing of owning an iPhone 11, you get the top processor and (almost all) the hardwares for US$300 less (basically a Google Pixel 3A less)  than the Pro model.

Long battery life

It’s not as great as the iPhone 11 Max Pro but the iPhone 11 has pretty good battery life that can last you more than a day! That’s just incredible. I never had a phone that could do that. It’s not just lasting a day but lasting a whole full day with plenty to spare. When my iPhone 7 was new,  it was still on as I got back home but it was down to 1-3% of battery. The iPhone 11, it’s at over 60% by the time I got home and it wasn’t even fully charged as I left the house, it was like 93%. Holly molly, this is a smartphone with real life daylong battery!

What I miss

After using it for a day in office, I already missed the Touch ID. As someone who works at the desk quite a lot, I am used to putting it on the desk and listen to stuff with my iPhone and I used to unlock it with my fingers without having to lift the phone up. Now  I have to, I found it annoying that I have to hold it up to my face to unlock it or type in the code. That’s really a step backward in conveniency for me. It’s annoying. It does bother me.

I also like 3D Touch better than the Haptic Touch. For me it is faster and I have learned to press hard to get 3D Touch options open for different apps and functions. I feel that the Haptic Touch wait is a bit unpredictable for me, or maybe I am just not use to it but it jus isn’t very natural. There were several times I was surprised it popped out when I didn’t intended to. And then there were also times when I wanted it to come out but I just didn’t time it right.

It just takes longer because it requires a longer press to have the options pops up whereas 3D Touch senses the amount of pressure which you could do it as quick as you want. Maybe I will get used to Haptic Touch, but right now I miss 3D Touch, especially after I have finally started to take advantage of it after using the iPhone 7 for 2 plus years.

I don’t like how iPhone 11 didn’t come with a 35mm headphone jack to lightning port adaptor. There was one for iPhone 7 when they first made the switch. I am someone who don’t like Bluetooth headphones because it’s another thing you have to charge and worrying about. Wired headphone rarely breaks and are better at a much cheaper price.

Conclusion

Anyway, this is only my first impression of using the new iPhone 11. I hope I would get used to the size and the weight, and the Haptic Touch eventually. For those of you who previously used a large phone or upgrading from a iPhone X or Plus model, this wouldn’t be a problem.

Later I will do some comparison with
